Brandwyine River Museum

Come join CHHS on Saturday, October 17th, for a guided tour of the N.C. Wyeth House & Studio and visit the Brandywine River Museum.

In 1911, with the proceeds from his illustrations for Treasure Island, the artist N.C. Wyeth purchased 18 acres of land on Rocky Hill in the village of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania.  Here he set down roots which for nine decades have nourished a family of extraordinary creativity.

Exhibiting American art in a 19th-century grist mill, the Brandywine River Museum is internationally known for its unparalleled collection of works by three generations of Wyeths and its fine collection of American illustration, still life and landscape painting.

The house/studio tour is one hour in length.  Allow an additional hour for museum visit and the Fall Harvest Market, which features regional arts and crafts.

  • We will meet 9:45 a.m. at the Museum parking lot, located on Route 1 near Route 100.

  • Cost is $14 per person which includes museum admission and guided house tour.

  • Advanced payment required. Please make checks payable to CHHS.

Space is limited.  For more information or to reserve your spot call Marge, 610-459-2303, or Heather, 215-738-2845, or email chesterheights@yahoo.com

2010 Calendar Available!

The first printing of the CHHS calendar in 2009 was such a success, we are doing it again.  The 2010 calendar will include photos of Chester Heights’ historic structures as well as selected archived images.  The calendar will be available for purchase for $15 at our October 12th meeting and at First Keystone Bank, Chester Heights’ branch, located on Baltimore Pike/Stoney Bank Road.

Historic Survey Update

In collaboration with the Delco Planning and Historic Preservation Department, CHHS volunteers surveyed 39 properties within Chester Heights. When complete this survey will represent the many changes of lifestyle and architecture in our community.  The results will be included in the Chester Heights Comprehensive Plan.

Historic Highlight

Hill of Skye”, located in the Darlington section, is an outstanding example of the brick formal English houses of Delaware Valley. Built circ.1722 by John Chamberlain, a weaver and later occupied by malsterer, Joseph Pennell and his grandson Mark, a noted horseman and a founder of the Rose Tree Hunt. Initial meetings of the club, the oldest in America took place here.

Did you know…?

The depressions of the original Baltimore Pike can still be recognized .2 of a mile SE of the Logtown Inn.

Gratitude & Applause

A great big “Thank You” goes out to Marge Bennett, Stacey Oscar, Sue and Sarah Carroll, Joan Hendrickson, and Pat Munnis who are researching, interviewing home owners, and documenting properties as part of the historical survey project. CHHS wishes to express their appreciation to Rachelle Green of the Delaware County Planning and Historic Preservation Department for her continuing guidance and assistance on this project.
